Editorial Review
“Strange Constitution” is the debut album from Bastion 4 and was released in the UK in November 2003. The new album was recorded over the space of four months in ‘Nomansland Studios in The New Forest, England and follows the release in March last year of the band’s first single “Blessed Reprieve” and their second single “Escape the Rot” in June.
Formed in Portsmouth a few years ago, Bastion 4 have come to prominence recently for their great songwriting ability and blistering live performances. The band draws from a deep well of defiantly English influences; the melodic pop of The Hollies, the hard-edged rock-lite of Badfinger, allied to the bright ‘n’ breezy outlook of early Blur. That’s not to say that they are living in the past; rather, they have identified the germ that makes good music great and are busy cultivating it. By opting to place themselves squarely in Britrock territory, Bastion 4 haven’t made things easy for themselves, but of all the unsigned acts operating in this field they are definitely somewhere near the top of the tree.
With a line up initially tried and tested on the local Portsmouth scene, Bastion 4 have gone on to play live across the length and breadth of Britain with tours and supports, college gigs and festivals. In May 2003 they organised their own free Festival in their native Portsmouth to raise money for local children’s charities. Many bands from the area and from the south coast of Britain participated, with over 4000 people attending the event over the two days. The band made its first visit to Ireland last March, performing live at a number of Dublin venues and criss-crossing the country on an extensive nationwide promotional radio tour. They won many new friends and fans in the process, they returned to Ireland In November to promote “Strange Constitution”. and did another busy round of radio, press & TV promotion.
Bastion 4’s singles have received considerable airplay in South Africa and a release there is being planned, along with a live tour of that country.
Work is already well advanced on the band’s second album ‘Modus Operandi’, due for release later this year.
